Dutch taxpayers are accustomed to receiving notices by mail from the tax authorities that they should file the VAT return and pay the tax before a specific date. The tax authorities will discontinue this service as of January 1, 2014. The VAT declaration letter with the girocard will already disappear in December 2013.

This means that taxpayers will henceforth have to be mindful themselves when to file their VAT declaration and pay the tax. They can, however, still find the filing deadlines and details for payment in their secure part of the tax authorities’ website.

In order to make the transition somewhat easier, the tax authorities will send each taxpayer at the beginning of 2014 an overview with the following information:

  • reporting periods
  • deadlines for filing and payment
  • payment reference

Tip: Taxpayers who prefer to continue receiving a notice by e-mail can arrange this themselves on their secure part of the tax authorities’ website. This can already be done now, so there is no need to wait until 2014!
